Buyer's Guide

How to Choose a Yarn for Chunky Blanket Work

So you're making a knitted chunky blanket and need a few suggestions on yarn. So where do you get your wool yarn, and what sort of weight would you like to use? You may be tempted to just pick up any old wool yarn, but this is not always the best idea. Not all wool yarns are created equal, and some wool breeds are much more suited to producing a thinner blanket of yarn. Before you go ahead and buy that first packet of instant Woolies, let's take a look at some of the different yarns that can be used when making a knitted blanket.

First, check current price online for acrylic yarn. This is the most widely bought yarn in the world, so it comes as no surprise that many stores sell acrylic threads in various weights. Try to stick to a fairly heavy weight, as it is easier to work with and makes a thicker blanket. If you are going to try a lighter weight, check current prices at various websites to see if you get a good deal. Remember though, once you have completed your blanket it will no longer be cheap!

You can also buy a yarn made from goose down obtained from Iceland. It is extremely soft and warm. Prices vary widely depending on the quality. In our opinion, blankets made from this type of yarn are not as warm as electric blankets, but they are very comfortable.

Next, you can get knitting needles. Knitting needles come in a variety of shapes and sizes, depending on how tightly or loosely you want to knit your blanket. I prefer to knit with a loose weave (the less tightly woven, the warmer), but if you plan on keeping the blanket as is, you can just use the knitting needles as you would any other needle. Most people who knit a chunky blanket with knitting needles will also use a small-sized swatch of yarn from their circular knitting needles to make their blanket.

Another con to yarns for chunky blanket is that the natural fibers do wear down over time. This wear and tear is normal and to be expected. Many other knitters have confirmed that the natural fibers will start to look threadbare after several years. If you have a machine, you can use a little household detergent to gently clean your knitting needles after each use. This should help take care of the wear and tear factor.

You will need an assortment of thread. Yarn for chunky blankets typically comes in three colors: black, brown, and red. Try to find heavier weight yarn in these colors to avoid having your blanket ends up wobbly. Another thing to remember is that the smaller size needles that you will use for knitting will give your work a bulkier appearance. Because of this, you will want to keep your stitches tight throughout your project.

When choosing your best yarn for chunky blankets, it is best to choose something that has some flexibility. Worsted weight yarn will give you plenty of options when it comes to knitting thick gauge patterns.
