Buyer's Guide

Buyers Guide: Embroidery Machines

Choosing an embroidery machine can be daunting. Most people don't want an expensive machine, or they believe it's only for making T-Shirts. These are some suggestions for things to look at and questions to ask before buying your first embroidery machine.

Considerations for embroidery machines

When buying an embroidery machine, there are many things you should consider. These are:

  • Cost and value
  • Sizes of the embroidery field and hoop
  • Design library
  • Connectivity
  • Display quality
  • Combination machine vs. embroidery only
  • Extra features

Value and cost

You want to get only the best value for your money because embroidery machines are more expensive than regular sewing machines. In addition, it is important to choose a machine that will last you a lifetime. You don't want to spend your money on a machine that will eventually outgrow you.

You are making an investment in your embroidery machine.

Sizes of the embroidery field and hoop

A lot of embroidery machines can only embroider a limited area. At a lower price, some machines can embroider only 4 inches of embroidery area!

Some embroidery machines can come with multiple hoops of different sizes. These machines often come with other sizes and shapes of hoops that can be purchased separately.

Design options and connectivity

Different machines can be loaded with different sizes of embroidery designs. Some machines have more designs than others. Some designs are more beautiful and useful than others.

You can download additional designs online and/or buy them on disc.

This is not always possible with all machines. Some embroidery machines require an actual computer connection to transfer additional designs. Others have a USB port that allows you to use a small flash drive instead.

Display

There is a huge difference in the display of embroidery machines with basic models. Some machines offer only a small window, with no clear view of the designs available.

This is especially important when making multi-colored designs. You want to be able to look at the entire design in its entirety on a single display.

These are some helpful features.

Some embroidery machines can be difficult to use. Some machines have more features than others, which makes them easier to use and can add value. These are some useful features you may want on your machine:

  • Automatic tension - Your machine will adjust the thread tension automatically to eliminate any chance of making mistakes.
  • Thread trimming - It can be tedious to trim all your threads manually. It is a time-saver to have a machine automatically clip all your threads.
  • Embellishment capabilities - Besides regular embroidery, you might also be interested in sequins or beadings. Attachments are available for some machines that allow you to attach these.
  • You can curve your letters with Archable Fonts - Combining other designs with this font gives you more design options and makes your lettering look more appealing than monogramming.
  • Onscreen Editing - Some machines don't allow you to edit designs very much. Most machines allow you to edit the size of a design by no more than 20%. Some machines allow for greater size editing. Others offer corners and borders that can be combined with other parts.
  • Variable speed - Some machines have variable speed controls that you can use to set the machine to speed up or slow down.
  • Knee Lifter - This handy device lets you lift your presser foot using your knee.
