Buyer's Guide

Thick Acrylic Paint Tips and Techniques

If you are looking for the perfect acrylic paint or acrylic drawing paper it is important that you follow a few simple tips and guidelines when applying your work of art. The best way to ensure quality, long lasting and beautiful results is to properly thin your acrylic paint with the proper tools, prior to adding it to your media. Many of us are quick to add the first layer of paint to our drawing paper or acrylic artwork and run off to the next project. What many of us do not realize is that if we apply the thickest coat of paint possible right to the beginning of our work, we will find that it is nearly impossible to make any adjustments or changes to our artwork once it is on the wall. If you are working with a thick acrylic paint and you have allowed it to cure fully before working on your canvas you should be able to make some simple changes and adjustments after you have added the first layer of paint to your piece of art.

There are several different ways you can apply your thin paint to your drawing or artwork. The easiest method is to simply add a little more paint to the canvas as opposed to waiting until you have completely dryed the surface of the painting. In this way, you will be able to create the most accurate thickness and color consistency as well as achieve the layered effect that many artists desire. In addition, if you are using different thinner coats of paint it is important to choose a brand that is recommended for your type of medium.

There are many brands of thinners that you can purchase today. Some of the most commonly used brands include; Stencils, Vellum, Watercolor, Oil, Softpaint and acrylic paint. As you experiment and learn more about the different types of thinners that are available today you will discover which one will work best for your particular art project. When purchasing these types of products it is important to carefully consider the following factors:

There are many brushes that have been designed specifically to be used with oil, watercolors, acrylic paints or both. The brushes range in size and shape from a large oval to a small round brush. If you are a hobbyist who is just beginning to paint and is still using brushes that came from the nursery you may want to purchase a small brush that has interchangeable bristles so you can change to a brush that is right for the type of paint you are using. If you are someone who prefers to use acrylic paints then a large brush is probably not the best choice as the paint will likely smudge quite easily on a large surface.

Another factor that should be taken into consideration before purchasing any type of thinning acrylic paint is to familiarize yourself with the proper methods and techniques for blending. Blending is necessary when creating any type of painting so that the colors do not appear to be too harsh or washed out when they are applied to an area of a work. In addition, if you do not blend the colors properly you may end up with a messy look on your work. If you cannot practice proper blending techniques before purchasing the paint then you should definitely look into purchasing some inexpensive blending pads that you can purchase at a craft or art supply store.

When it comes to adding flour to acrylic paints there are a few different methods that you can try that will help create the appearance of bold and thick textures. One method that you can try is pouring a few drops of water into the brush before you apply the paint. The water will provide the grain that is necessary in creating the thickness that you desire. Another method that you can try is by adding a few drops of water to the end of a brush before applying the paint. If you do not like the grain that is created by both of these methods then you may want to consider buying a brush that has larger bristles and a stiffer bristled brush for even more intense grain control.

Many acrylic paints have different viscosity levels and some are harder to apply to canvas compared to others. If you are working with a thicker paint you may experience an increase in difficulty in controlling the flow or even having to scrape the acrylic paint off of the canvas to achieve the thickness you desire. One way that you can help to combat this problem is by investing in a few flow improvers. Flow inhibitors can be purchased at most art supply stores and even some online sites. Once you get your flow inhibitors the first time around you will notice that the viscosity of your acrylic paints will be easier to control.

Many artists do not realize that the paint thinner that is included with their acrylic gel mixers is actually considered a form of water solubility. You should always mix your joint compound according to the manufactures instructions. Always mix your compound using the lowest possible temperature. This will keep your joint compound from changing consistency and will prevent any damage to your brushes while you are working. Once you have completely dried your joint compound you can use your brushes again but make sure that you wash your brushes well afterwards.
