Buyer's Guide: Craft Cutters

Types of Craft Cutter Blades

Craft cutters generally cover an assortment of different bladed instruments used to manually cut or grind different kinds of materials for hobby or craft projects. The proper tools need to be precisely designed to match with the hand and possess a strong grip to avoid slippage. The blades, too, are carefully sized and formed to handle specific jobs, be it cutting through tough materials like wood or doing intricate detail work on delicate glass. While some of the more popular hand-held units are sold in hardware stores, there are a number of different models available online that you can also buy and customize according to your needs.

The craft cutters most commonly used are those with serrated edges. These are ideal for detailed work or cutting small pieces, although they are not suited to work with larger or thicker items. Some are also made with teeth in the back or sides to make them ideal for use in creating different designs and patterns.

For precision cutting, there is nothing better than a precision knife. It is a tool that is both compact and very versatile. A precision knife has a sharp blade that will cut down anything that is up to 0.7 inches in width. Unlike the craft cutters mentioned above, a precision knife can perform several kinds of cutting, depending on its size and shape.

Like other safety knives, a precision model is usually made out of a hard-wearing metal. The handle and blade are both tough enough to handle precision cutting, although they are still subject to the wear and tear of use. When handling the precision model, keep the blade as close to your skin as possible and ensure that you protect yourself by wearing a safety cap. When cutting with precision blades, keep the blade close to the wood and do not cut beyond the safety cap.

Another kind of machine that is ideal for fabric cutting is a fabric cutting machine. This is an industrial-strength version of the craft cutters. Unlike the craft cutters, this machine contains a blade that will cut fabric material up to 6 inches thick. Because of its strength, the fabric cutting machine may be dangerous if handled improperly. Follow these safety tips when using this machine.

Ceramic scissors are also popular cutting tools. They are similar to the craft cutters but are more powerful and have more suction power. Like other safety cutters, ceramic scissors are subject to wear and tear, so they should be handled with care. Wear a protective shield and always hold the blade at least two feet away from your body.

Most fabricators prefer craft cutters over standard ones because they produce quality results in a shorter amount of time. The length of time spent sharpening craft cutters is less than that of standard ones. They can also be used for detailed work that requires repetitive cuts. Craft cutters are not only limited to cutting fabric, it can also cut paper, aluminum foil, rubber, and plastic.

As you shop for craft cutters, remember to ask about sharpening options, how to maintain them and what materials are best suited for each. Some crafters get a Craft cutter and then discover that it does not cut easily. Others need something stronger for heavy detail work that they cannot handle on their own. Whatever your needs, crafters are happy that they can use one of these machines to meet them!

With a little care, craft cutters will last for years. The length of time varies according to the type of blade used. Blades can be stiffened through use, but new ones should be sharpened before being used. Dull blade blades will quickly lose their sharp edge and no craftsman wants to have to use a blunt blade to make a beautiful quilt or another type of stunning work.

If you need a precision knife to make long cuts, then a quilting frame with a straight blade will do the job. For short, precise cuts, a blade with a serrated edge may be needed. The curved type works great for long cuts. For fabrics like wool, silk, or cotton, both long cuts, and short cuts can be made with a fabric cutter.

Craft cutters can be used for making a variety of projects. Shapes, colors, and sizes of metal blades are available in various sizes. Prices vary depending on quality. Hard plastic blades, wood blades, or carbon steel blades cost more. For beginners, metal blades that are solid and are not easily broken are the best choice. For longer-lasting, heavier-duty use, wood or plastic blades will suffice.
